Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Practice Standards and Safety, the Technical Practice and Safety Lead (TPSL) is responsible for leading, establishing, implementing, and monitoring best practice and safety standards in pharmacy distribution and technical practice. This role also maintains active practice in drug distribution. The TPSL is an expert practitioner who provides leadership in developing, evaluating, and sustaining standards and projects that standardize, optimize, and advance medication distribution systems across Acute Care Alberta, Provincial Health Corporations (e.g. AHS, Cancer Care Alberta), and the other Provincial Health Agencies: Assisted Living Alberta, Primary Care Alberta, and Recovery Alberta. Key functions include: Development and implementation of standards and performance metrics for Health Service Provider organizations, with ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance and best practices. Integration of safety into all aspects of pharmacy practice, prioritizing staff and patient safety. Staying current with national and international pharmacy standards and literature to drive innovation. Assess and develop workforce standards for distribution, technical, and safety practices to inform capacity planning and future needs. Evaluate safety implications of medication records, clinical guidance documents, and care pathways. The TPSL applies deep expertise in pharmacy distribution, technical practice, and safety to serve as a resource across all health organizations promoting excellence in pharmacy operations. In this capacity, the role drives innovation by identifying solutions to advance technical practice and provides leadership on medication safety through system-based approaches that reduce patient harm. The TPSL acts as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders, fostering collaboration and ensuring alignment with best practices.

As a Pharmacy Technician II, you will be recognized as an expert technical practitioner who is accountable for guiding the development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing management of projects and programs that support the standardization and advancement of pharmacy technician practice and assistant training materials. This includes identifying innovative solutions and providing advice and direction to address challenges related to technical practice and pharmacy operational processes.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a CCAPP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Current, provisional, or transferable registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as a Pharmacy Technician. A minimum of 5 years' experience in hospital pharmacy practice.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of a CCAPP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Diploma Program. Registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as a Pharmacy Technician. Minimum 7 years of hospital pharmacy practice experience, ideally within large, complex organizations and across multiple institutions. At least 2 years in a technical practice lead (TPL) or operations manager role; experience in technical project leadership or safety-focused roles (e.g., aseptic lead, QA lead, implementation lead, safety technician) will be considered. In-depth knowledge of best pharmacy practices and medication safety standards within Alberta and across Canada. Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects and workloads in a dynamic environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, complemented by strong critical thinking abilities. Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions, making sound decisions under pressure. Highly self-directed, organized, and adaptable, able to work independently and respond to changing needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Membership with Pharmacy Technician Society of Alberta, Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians, and/or Canadian Society of Health System Pharmacy. Project management expertise. Ability to foster partnerships with stakeholders inside and outside of Pharmacy. Ability to think in abstract concepts related to the future provision of pharmacy practice. Ability to lead and manage change. Strong capability to translate complex concepts into practical, actionable components.
